How to Clean Stuffed Animals Without Ruining Them: Washing Guide for Every Type
Your kid's favourite stuffed animal is basically a germ sponge. Here's how to clean it without ruining the fur, eyes, or stuffing.
Machine Washing (Most Plush Toys)
- Mesh laundry bag or zippered pillowcase
- Gentle cycle, cold water, mild detergent (Dreft works great)
- No fabric softener — it leaves sticky residue
- Toss in a couple of towels for cushioning
Hand Washing (Jellycat, Vintage, Delicate)
- Basin of cold water + mild detergent
- Gently agitate, work stains with fingers
- Rinse until water runs clear
- Don't wring — squeeze gently, roll in towel
Spot Cleaning (Electronics, Build-A-Bear with Sound)
- Mix 1 tsp detergent in 1 cup cold water
- Dab stain with white cloth — don't rub
- Wipe with damp cloth, air dry
Quick Deodorizing
Sprinkle baking soda, let sit 2 hours, vacuum off. For dust mites: freeze in a bag overnight.
Never machine wash: FurReal pets, anything with batteries, Squishmallows with sequins, or vintage collectors' items.
Cold water, gentle detergent, air dry. That's it. Follow those three rules and you're golden.
